The Avengers 2 Movie

Earth's Mightiest Faces Their Greatest Challenge Yet

These Guys are Pros

While the main heroes have had their fair share of the limelight (with Bruce Banner being played by no less than three actors at that), both Black Widow and Hawkeye have yet to feature in a movie of their own. That's not to say that there is no chance of that though, as there are rumors buzzing in the Marvel community about possible films featuring the characters. Natasha Romanoff's name in particular is being mentioned along with possible appearance of the Winter Solder as her mentor and the villains being in the form of HYDRA. Aside from our protagonists, one such character to play a big part in Avengers is Thor's adopted brother Loki. After being a major bad guy with acceptance issues he gets rejected by Odin and the Thor movie ends with him falling into an abyss created by the destruction of the Bifrost Bridge. He makes a comeback in the Avengers, still as an antagonist. This time he makes a deal with the Other, a servant of alien warlord Thanos and the leader of a cyborg-like extraterrestrial race. The God of Mischief agrees to retrieve the powerful Tesseract in exchange for a Chitauri army in order to conquer Earth.

Thor’s Little Brother

So, being a part of the first movie, is there a chance that Loki will make another appearance in the sequel? Our Spidey sense tells us that it is not a likely scenario. Due to the fact that he will definitely be appearing in the second Thor movie, Loki's character will undergo a serious overhaul. No, he won't be baking cookies and carrying Asgardian babies, but the word going around is that he will be fighting alongside his brother, Thor, instead of against him. That being said, he has also been given such big roles in the past movies that now it's time to give a new villain his two hours of fame. It doesn't mean he can't appear in cameos or post credits scenes though, you know Marvel.

That Creepy Purple Alien

Speaking of post credits scenes, remember the one from the first Avengers movie? Yes, that is Thanos and yes he is the likeliest baddie to appear in the second movie. For those who don't know the grinning purple giant, Thanos is one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy. His name is derived from "Thanatos" which is another way to refer to Death in Greek mythology. While it does have a nice ring to it, his name also ties in well with his actual relationship to the comic character Death. Remember what the Other said about fighting humans is "courting death"? That's some clever foreshadowing right there. Anyway, the gist of it is that Thanos met Mistress Death, fell in love with her and put it upon himself to earn her affections. This led to him to gather the worst of the worst in the universe to form his army. He then travels to Earth in order to harness the power of the Cosmic Cube-slash-Tesseract for himself, thereby meeting resistance from the planet's superheroes. Depending on the timeline the Avengers 2 movie will be set in, Thanos may already have the Infinity Gauntlet. Aside from being impressively shiny, the Infinity Gauntlet allows its wielder to gain control over Power, Space, Time, Reality, Mind and the Soul if all soul gems are present. In short, it allows him to do anything --as if he wasn't powerful enough. Will our heroes prevail? Of course, but how in particular, we have yet to find out.

Not so New Members

What makes the Avengers unique as a team is that the members are ever-changing in the comics. Of course, being tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is to be expected that Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Thor are going to be in the sequel, but what about the rest of the roster? Logical choices could include War Machine and the Falcon due to their upcoming appearances in Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier respectively. Henry Pym a.k.a. Ant Man may make at least a cameo appearance here, seeing as he has his own movie lined up after the superhero team blockbuster. That being said, the Wasp may just show up in tandem with Pym, seeing as director Joss Whedon already mentioned making a "very Waspy draft" before they finalized the Avengers cast and script.

And Some Things Haven’t Changed

Also, despite how remote the possibility is, Dr. Strange can be counted as a candidate. First, a pair of writers were already hired to make a script for the sorcerer supreme back in 2011. And second, Kevin Feige, the President of Production at Marvel Studios himself, already expressed his hopes to include Dr. Strange's movie in the next set of marvel movies. It would have been great to mention a few more key Marvel heroes, but alas not all film rights belong to Marvel Studios. Sorry Wolverine, Spiderman and Fantastic Four fans. Getting excited yet? We still have a couple of years to snoop around for more Avengers 2 news. Just think, the longer you wait, the longer you have to catch up on Marvel Universe lore. Oh, and don't forget all the movies under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella coming out pre-Avengers 2. Based on US release dates, Iron Man 3 is scheduled for a May 3, 2013 premiere, Thor: The Dark World comes out on November 8, 2013 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled for an April 4, 2014 launch date. To tie them all together, The Avengers 2 comes out on the 1st of May, 2015.
