Captain America 2 Movie

Sidekick Turned Villain

So how does Barnes change sides in the first place? Well in the comics, a preserved Bucky was found by the Russians while they were searching for the missing body of Captain America. After he was examined for any signs of the Super Soldier serum, he was again placed in cryostasis. Years later Bucky was revived, outfitted with the latest cybernetic arm and was brainwashed to become the perfect Russian assassin. He retained no memories of his past fighting alongside Captain America and instead was given mental implants to remain loyal only to his captors. During this period of time, he meets Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow). He becomes one of her mentors and the two fall in love. The relationship is cut short however, as Bucky is kept in a cryonic state in between missions in order to prolong his life. Now all we need are some well-placed flash backs to flesh out Bucky's character before he encounters the Cap as a brainwashed Russian killing machine and we've got ourselves a classic best friend rumble. Speaking of the Black Widow, it is confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Score one for the Avengers fans.

Walking a Lonely Road

The big reunion between Captain America and Winter Soldier is bound to be one of the biggest turns of the movie –ol’ Cap obviously feels out of place in the modern times, Bucky would have been a familiar face. But just how far will the Marvel Cinematic Universe take this inevitable clash. In the current comic storyline, Steve has relinquished the Captain America title to the now-reformed Bucky (who is now the new Captain America), and the former Cap simply fights under his own name, Steve Rogers. Now what about the star spangled hero in the movies? Being a true blue soldier, he continues to work with S.H.I.E.L.D., finding his place in modern day America. During the final events of Captain America: The First Avenger, the Cap ended up being forced to crash land a HYDRA plane into the Northern Atlantic Ocean. As a result, his date with Margaret "Peggy" Carter didn't take place and with movie magic he fast forwards through time, revived post-cryostasis. It seems Hayley Atwell, the actress who played Peggy is not among the sequel's cast members. No she wasn't retconned, but it seems that Peggy is done being Captain America's love interest. The Cap did reminisce about her during the Avengers movie, which could indicate that a conclusion of that storyline is on the horizon. Because of how time passed for Rogers, Winter Soldier seems like the perfect opportunity for him to find out just what happened to his girl. Will her niece, S.H.I.E.L.D. ex-field agent Sharon Carter, be Captain America's new leading lady? First his best friend becomes a reverse engineered villain and now he may have to face the love of his life after missing their date for some decades? The Captain has quite some baggage there.

Bring On the Fury

Seeing as Captain America will be working with S.H.I.E.L.D. in the upcoming movie, Nick Fury fans will also have something to look forward to. Instead of just being the guy who brought the Avengers together, it looks like we get to see more of Fury's back story in Captain America's second movie. Rumors mention a cameo for Hawkeye as well, being Bucky's rival for Natasha. And lastly, Maria Hill is among the confirmed characters, so there is definitely plenty to watch out for in terms of back stories for the members of the elite espionage-slash-military organization.

Falcon Who?

A more curious addition to The Winter Soldier's cast is the inclusion of Falcon. Anthony Mackie will be playing the role of Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon. Who exactly is Falcon? In the comics, he started out as your average Joe, albeit with a dark past. Growing up in the streets of Harlem, his personal tragedies led him towards a criminal path. As "Snap" Wilson, he took assignments from the mob, leading up to being used by the Red Skull as a pawn against Captain America. The Red Skull reverted Snap's personality back to that of Sam's and used the Cosmic Cube to give him superpowers. Sam gained the ability to communicate telepathically with birds, particularly with a falcon he brought with him to Rio named Redwing. The Red Skull's plan worked and Falcon became one of the Cap's regular crime fighting allies, watching over his hometown. It was Black Panther who gave Falcon Wakandan tech that allowed him to fly. His "Snap" personality reemerges from time to time, but he is able to overcome this flaw. Seeing as the Cap has Bucky to fight against, Falcon looks to be just the backup he needs. Now the question remains the same: will we be seeing Redwing?

These Guys are B-List Aren’t They?

And for the rest of the bad guys –Brock Rumlow, known better as the villain Crossbones is also joining team villain for this upcoming marvel movie. This particular baddie had a big role in the comics' Winter Soldier plotline. He works for the Red Skull and is among those responsible for the temporary assassination of Captain America. Remember Peggy's niece? Well she was being used by Crossbones and was the one who shot the Cap as she the under the control of hypnosis. See how it all ties together nicely? Frenemies, superhero allies with a sinister secret and unresolved love issues --that's just a tip of the iceberg as to what we can expect from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So mark April 4, 2014 on your calendar to get your S.H.I.E.L.D. fix and watch the Cap battle it out against formidable (though strangely not-so-well-known) super foes.
